EXT.CITY DAY
MAGPIE walks in Kensington. He goes looking for the
PAPARAZZI to help him discover more. He comes close to a
group of men with cameras at their chests, more or less
discrete waiting in the street in small groups. MAGPIE
decides to speak with one of them.

decides to speak with one of them.
MAGPIE
Hello sir... can I ask for some
information?
PAPARAZZI 1
Start talking kid...
MAGPIE
Do you know this actor?
MAGPIE shows PAPARAZZI 1 one of the magazines.
PAPARAZZI 1
Sure kid! It’s Michael
Thompson...This was a long time ago
but he’s still a good guy.
MAGPIE
Do you know where he lives?
PAPARAZZI 1
Michael lives over there, near
Holland Park... What do you want
with him?
MAGPIE
I’m just looking for him...
(Hesitating a little) Maybe I’ll
get him to autograph these
magazines.
PAPARAZZI 1
Kid... Get yourself some new
magazines and I’ll tell you where
to find the new guys. This guy is
already at the end of his career...
Nobody gives him leading roles
anymore.

MAGPIE
Just leave it... I really want
this... (Invents) My grandmother is
a fan of him... I want to surprise
her.
PAPARAZZI 1
Ok guy... I was just telling you.
(Laughs) Wait a minute I’ll tell
you where he lives...
PAPARAZZI 1 looks around for other PAPARAZZI. He sees
someone and calls them.
PAPARAZZI 1
Ralph Oi! Come here!
PAPARAZZI 2 arrives to PAPARAZZI 1 and MAGPIE.
PAPARAZZI 1
Look here mate, do you know where
Michael Thompson lives?
PAPARAZZI 2
Who? Michael Thompson from "Love
without reservation"?
PAPARAZZI 1
Yeah...
PAPARAZZI 2
What do you know that I don’t?
PAPARAZZI 1
Nothing Ralph... It’s this boy here
who wants to get an autograph from
him. It’s a surprise for his
grandmother.
PAPARAZZI 2
What? You want an autograph of a
“has been”?
MAGPIE smiles meekly.
PAPARAZZI 2
Let me think...
PAPARAZZI 1
All I remember is it was near the
Holland park... If he hasn’t
moved...

PAPARAZZI 2
Ah yeah, that’s it... Napier... You
know it kid?
MAGPIE
Well... No. But I’ll ask someone
else when I’m closer... Thank you.
MAGPIE leaves. PAPARAZZI 1 and 2 follow MAGPIE with a look.
PAPARAZZI 2
Look... Michael Thompson only has
granny fans... He never got beyond
a promising star.
PAPARAZZI 1
That’s true. But during the height
of his career he collected enough
money to get a house there...
The two laugh. Suddenly two other PAPARAZZI see someone
known and run over with the cameras.
PAPARAZZI 2
Look over there... Jude Law
entering the ice cream parlour!
PAPARAZZI 1
Hey wait a minute... Ralph!
The two go running to the ice cream parlour to take
photographs. Other PAPARAZZI run there.
32.EXT. CITY DAY (SCENE SET TO MUSIC)
MAGPIE walks through Holland Park searching for Napier. He
looks at all the signs with street names on. He finally
finds Napier Road. He looks at the mansions, dazzled.
(END MUSIC).
MAGPIE
Damn... Look at those big houses!
MAGPIE looks disorientated.
MAGPIE
Which is his house? I’ll have to
just wait and see...
MAGPIE sits on the street, willing to wait. He is eager to
find the house. A girl (CHARLOTTE) passes him, wearing a
cleaner’s outfit and carrying a shopping bag.

MAGPIE
Sorry miss, can you tell me where
is the house of Mr Michael
Thompson... the actor?
CHARLOTTE
I don’t know kid... I only started
to work here recently. He does live
in this street but I’m not sure
which house...
MAGPIE
Thank you...
CHARLOTTE departs, MAGPIE is even more impatient.
SCENES OF TRANSITION (MUSIC ON)
MAGPIE stays sat on the floor. He paces up and down the
street. He throws stones against a wall. When a door opens
up he runs over trying to find out who lives there. (DUSK)
MAGPIE is disappointed and sits back on the floor.
(MUSIC FADE OUT).
33.INT.ORPHANAGE CANTEEN NIGHT
MAGPIE sits next to LITTLE TOMMY to eat.
LITTLE TOMMY
Where have you been today?
MAGPIE
None of your business...
LITTLE TOMMY
I was just asking.
MAGPIE
Sorry Little Tommy... I was looking
for someone... Don’t worry. These
problems are mine.
MAGPIE finishes eating and gets up. He takes his tray and
clears the remains into the rubbish bin. Other boys are also
clearing their trays. SISTER VIRGINIA is overseeing them
all. When MAGPIE goes to leave, SISTER VIRGINIA stops him.
SISTER VIRGINIA
Magpie... Wait just a minute!
You’ll tell me what’s going on now.

MAGPIE
Erm... It’s nothing Sister, I told
you this morning. I am looking for
someone.
SISTER VIRGINIA
Who is this person? Now you have to
tell me.
MAGPIE gets impatient and tries to end the conversation.
MAGPIE
I don’t know...
SISTER VIRGINIA
How can you not know? Don’t try to
cheat me boy. What have you been
doing?
MAGPIE looks away again, compromised.
SISTER VIRGINIA
Come on. Tell me what you’re doing.
I’m not kidding.
MAGPIE
I went looking for the place where
I was born...
SISTER VIRGINIA
I told you to stay out of trouble.
MAGPIE
There is no problem. I just went to
my mother’s pub. I went to High
Street and found out where I was
born.
SISTER VIRGINIA
Magpie what were you doing? I do
not know if it was a good idea to
have gone to that place. (Worried)
I should not have told you.
MAGPIE
Don’t worry Sister Virginia. There
was nothing to lose. I just wanted
to know.
SISTER VIRGINIA
It’s better to leave it there. Do
you hear? Stay out of it! There’s
nothing you can change. You will

only suffer for it ... And who are
you looking for?
MAGPIE
I don’t know ... I mean I found
some old magazines in my mother’s
room. All the covers have just one
actor on. My mother would really
like it if I found him because they
were stored deep in the closet ...
I must know this actor.
SISTER VIRGINIA
But what would you gain? Just let
it go.
MAGPIE
I’m not just gonna leave it. I also
want to be a famous actor and would
like to meet him, the favourite
actor of my mother. Maybe he can
train me up.
SISTER VIRGINIA
Magpie, I understand your dream,
but there is no way of meeting a
famous actor like that. Have you
thought about how many other people
try to do the same?
MAGPIE
Yeah, I’ve thought about it. But
I’ll get there. I’m going to talk
to him, even if it’s the last thing
I do in my life.
SISTER VIRGINIA
You cannot do this. He could still
call the police.
MAGPIE
No... why would he do a thing like
that?
SISTER VIRGINIA
Come boy! (Severe) You will not be
going out every day. There are
still lessons and you will get in
trouble. Listen carefully to what I say.
No more going out! If you go out
again without permission, I’ll send
you to another school, maybe to
York. Do you hear? Its Over!
44.
MAGPIE angrily turns away and goes to the dormitory. SISTER
VIRGINIA freezes.
