59.EXT.CITY DAY
The
two leave in the car onto the street. JOHN closes the gate. GEORGE was
expectantly waiting for Michael to take Magpie home in his car. When
they pass through the gate, GEORGE begins to follow them at a distance.
60.EXT.CITY INT. MICHAEL’S CAR DAY
MICHAEL notices MAGPIE is shrunken with shame.
MICHAEL
What’s up kid... There’s no need to be ashamed.
MAGPIE
I'm not sir... I mean... well, maybe just a little.
MICHAEL
What a strange kid! (Laughs) So where are we going again?
MAGPIE
It's at Lewisham passing through University Hospital... On High Street.
MICHAEL
Where?
MICHAEL disguises the fact that he knows exactly where the bar of Janine is.
MAGPIE
I'm living in the pub that was my mother’s.
MICHAEL
Are you there alone?
MAGPIE
Yes I am (smile) I have found a way to get inside. I cleaned it all up. (Slides down a little) I have been hiding there.
MICHAEL
Hiding? Hiding from what?
MAGPIE
I mean (clumsy) the house was closed.
MICHAEL
Where did you live before?
MAGPIE
I was in the orphanage of the Sacred Heart Sisters...
MICHAEL
And why run away?
MAGPIE
I didn’t. I left. My best friend died and I didn’t want to be there any longer. I'm not a boy who likes to get stuck somewhere.
MICHAEL
How long is it since you left?
MAGPIE
Only a few days...
MICHAEL
And did you tell someone where you were going?
MAGPIE
Well... I said I was leaving. But I didn’t say I would not be returning. Then I found the house of my mother.
MICHAEL
You should have warned the orphanage. The Sisters will be concerned.
MAGPIE is silent.
MICHAEL
I'll call them tomorrow and say you're alright. Ok?
MAGPIE
You're not going to take me back are you?
MICHAEL
No of course not. I promise. But we must notify them, or the police will start looking for you... What would I call the Head?
MAGPIE
It's Sister Virginia.
MICHAEL
Well... I’ll talk to her. But promise me that you
won’t do anything stupid, okay? And we’ll see this home as well. If
anyone catches you there, you could cause problems.
They finally arrive near the pub.
MAGPIE
It’s right here, Sir.
61.EXT. GEORGE’S DAY CAR
GEORGE, who had continued following Michael’s car,
also stops a little behind them. He notes MICHAEL and MAGPIE also stop
their car. GEORGE nods.
GEORGE
This idiot will ruin everything. I hate stupid people!
GEORGE waits a moment. MICHAEL and MAGPIE leave the car and head towards the pub. GEORGE, angry, punches the steering wheel.
GEORGE
What an idiot! What an IDIOT! He’s going straight into the lion's den.
Furious, he kicks off at great speed.
62.INT.PUB DAY
MAGPIE enters followed by MICHAEL. MICHAEL is afraid to enter. He has a flashback of the fateful day.
INSERT SCENE 2:
"MICHAEL ignores BARBARA,
gets up and goes to the bar. He looks around to see if he is being
watched. He tries disguising his conversation with JANINE.
MICHAEL
What do you want again?
JANINE
I want an answer from you... Am I facing this situation alone? You are also responsible Michael.
MICHAEL
Fuck off... Do you think I'm stupid? How can I be? Do you not see? What would I tell my family... my friends? You're crazy!”
END INSERT SCENE 2
MICHAEL is interrupted by MAGPIE.
MAGPIE
Look... I cleaned and packed everything away into the right places in the rooms.
MICHAEL
It's true... everything is as before.
MAGPIE
As before? Did you know the pub?
MICHAEL disguises his slip.
MICHAEL
No, no... I'm just saying... Everything is so neat, just as it would be when it was open.
MAGPIE
Really... And there, down the corridor, is the room where I was born.
MAGPIE goes to the room. MICHAEL looks at the counter
of the bar and sees JANINE serving. MICHAEL looks and smiles at JANINE.
MICHAEL startles. MAGPIE calls MICHAEL into his room.
MAGPIE (OFF)
Sir... Come here.
MICHAEL looks towards the hallway that goes to
MAGPIE’S room. He looks back to the bar, but Janine is no longer there.
MICHAEL sweats and is shaken into the following bedroom.
63.INT.PUB BEDROOM DAY
MICHAEL comes from the bar. MAGPIE grabs the
magazines that he has stored under the picture frame containing the
photo of Janine. MICHAEL just looks down at the site where Janine was
killed. He has a new flashback.
INSERT FLASHBACK SCENE 7:
"MICHAEL enters the room
in time to see GEORGE unleashing a last strong kick to JANINE’s womb.
MICHAEL extends his arms, paralyzed by terror.
MICHAEL
What are you doing? Are you crazy?
GEORGE
(In delirium) I'm protecting you my friend...
MICHAEL
(Shocked) This is not for me. You aren’t protecting anything... You’re crazy... My god you're crazy...
GEORGE
(Mad) Nothing... I solved
your problem. I sorted out your life... Forget this. Forget this woman.
(Screams) We’re leaving now, go! Get out!
MICHAEL looks bleakly at JANINE, bathed in blood, prostrate on the ground…"
END OF INSERTION OF SCENE 7.
MICHAEL, affected by the recall, begins crying uncontrollably.
MICHAEL
Stop!
MAGPIE startles. He looks at MICHAEL surprised. MICHAEL realizes what is happening.
MAGPIE
Are you alright right, Mr. Michael?
MICHAEL
Sorry Magpie... It’s this heat. It makes me dizzy.
MAGPIE
Did you want some water? I can get you...
MICHAEL
No... no... leave it. I have a better idea ... Bring
those magazines with you. I'll take you to dinner. How about that? Does
it seem like a good idea? Let's get some air... Eating a burger with a
large cold drink.
MAGPIE is surprised but very pleased.
MAGPIE
Are you for real?
MICHAEL
Of course! Bring the magazines and we can go.
MAGPIE enthusiastically places the magazines in his bag. He also puts a photograph of Janine in it and follows behind MICHAEL.
64.EXT. ESPLANADE CITY DAY
MICHAEL and MAGPIE dine on the terrace of a café
along the Thames. MAGPIE satisfactorily eats a large burger. MICHAEL
observes him.
MICHAEL
Is it good?
MAGPIE
Very! What a delight. Thanks Mr Michael.
MICHAEL
No need to thank me. The pleasure is mine and you
deserve it. You have done a good job in my garden. Plus, I don't know
if you've been eating enough the past few days.
MAGPIE
Hey, I have lunch every day with John and at the end of the day I buy an ice cream and still have many pounds left.
MICHAEL
Only having lunch is not is sufficient. You need more
because you’re growing. From tomorrow you can stay and have dinner at
my home, ok?
MAGPIE
Gosh Mr Michael, you are very generous. Why are you doing all this for me?
MICHAEL does not answer. He just smiles. MAGPIE requites a smile and takes another bite of his burger.
65.EXT.CITY DAY (SCENE set to music)
(FOLLOWING PLANS) MICHAEL and MAGPIE walk along the
Thames talking. They stay for a while watching a band playing in the
street. MICHAEL offers to buy MAGPIE an ice cream. He shows indecision
in choosing which to have. It becomes dark, and the two are sitting on
a bench.
MICHAEL
It's getting late... Before I forget again; give me those magazines to sign.
MAGPIE enthusiastically smiles and takes the magazines from his bag. The photograph of Janine falls into his lap.
MICHAEL
Can I see the picture?
MAGPIE
Of course.
MAGPIE passes the frame to MICHAEL who appreciates the woman.
MICHAEL
She’s very pretty.
MAGPIE
Very. It's my mother. Look (points to big Ben) It’s just there!
MICHAEL smiles and hands the photo back to MAGPIE.
MICHAEL
I'll write the best dedication in the world to her.
MICHAEL grabs the magazine and opens to a page with
his photographs on. He begins to sign them as he dictates what he is
writing. MAGPIE tries to peek.
MICHAEL
For the prettiest girl in the world. Mother of my... (Pauses) Mother of my friend Magpie. With all my love, Michael Thompson.
MAGPIE
I’m honoured (Reads) "Mother of my friend Magpie" Gosh how nice... I am really your friend?
MICHAEL
Yes and I'm your friend too. A true friend.
MAGPIE
Thank you so much.
MICHAEL gives the magazine back to MAGPIE. MAGPIE re-reads it one more time and places them back in the bag.
MICHAEL
Now, we had better go. It’s getting late. You also need to rest.
MAGPIE
Yes, tomorrow me and Mr. John are going to finish those hedges!
MICHAEL
Thanks!
MICHAEL gets up and reaches out to pull MAGPIE up.
MAGPIE grabs MICHAEL’S hand and gets up. The two laugh in good humour
and walk back to the car.
66.EXT.CITY NIGHT
MICHAEL and MAGPIE arrive back at the pub of Janine.
MAGPIE gets out of the car and waves. MICHAEL returns the wave. MICHAEL
goes home. MAGPIE runs home very happy.
67.INT.PUB ROOM NIGHT
MAGPIE
enters the pub in great joy. He puts the bag on his bed, takes the
frame from the bag and talks to the photograph of Janine.
MAGPIE
I managed to get your surprise mum! Look! I have a
dedication to you from Mr. Michael Thompson! I did it! He's such a nice
guy, and is my friend now!
MAGPIE spins around clasping the frame with the
photograph of Janine to his chest. In this joy, he clashes into GEORGE
who was hiding. GEORGE glares at him with a menacing look. MAGPIE
screams in fright.
GEORGE
Hey kid. Why are you clowning around with Michael?
MAGPIE, terrified, can barely speak.
MAGPIE
What do you want?
GEORGE
I want to know what you're preparing! Tell me boy!
MAGPIE
Nothing... What do you want from me? What will you do to me?
GEORGE
I still don’t know... First I want an answer from you and then I will decide how I’m going to twist your neck!
MAGPIE, scared, pushes GEORGE who falls onto the bed.
MAGPIE drops the photo frame onto the floor. The glass frame shatters.
MAGPIE tries to pick up the photo, but has to flee because GEORGE has
risen. MAGPIE runs from the room in the direction of the street.
68.EXT.CITY NIGHT
MAGPIE flees out of the window, but GEORGE manages to
grab one of his legs. MAGPIE kicks GEORGE in the face and flees,
running down the street. GEORGE chases MAGPIE but quits shortly after.
GEORGE’S nose bleeds. He puts his hand to his nose to see the blood. He
yells at MAGPIE.
GEORGE
I'll get you kid! Today... tomorrow or a year from now. But I will get you!
GEORGE stares after him menacingly. MAGPIE runs further into the background down the street.
69.EXT.CITY NIGHT
MAGPIE runs down the street, scared. He looks back
and checks whether that he is no longer being followed. He hides in an
alley and falls to the floor crying. He stays there until interrupted
by a POLICE 2.
POLICE 2
What are you doing here, boy?
MAGPIE is startled and rises suddenly.
MAGPIE
Nothing, sir ...
The POLICE 2 shines a torch into MAGPIE’S face, who is trying to hide his tears by turning his face away.
