The Pony Boys part IV by JR Villar

15.ext forest day

ALFONSO is still intent on his journey. Suddenly he hears the branches and leaves becoming greatly agitated behind him. ALFONSO looks and sees the two PONY BOYS running in his direction. Impulsively, he begins to up his running pace through the branches and trees knowing he has to run away as fast as possible. The two PONY BOYS are more accustomed to the rapidly approaching forest. ALFONSO is getting worried, but he has an idea. He sees a tree branch, slightly thinner but sufficiently strong, crossed horizontally in the path ahead. Reasoning with lightning reactions, he grabs the branch and bends it back until he has built up an enormous pressure. When the two PONY BOYS reach him, ALFONSO looks at them briefly and, with an air of enjoyment, laughs at them.
They look at him and realize too late what ALFONSO is ready to achieve with the branch. They look at each other, stunned, and without any time to think, receive an almighty lash from the branch that catapults them backwards through the air, causing them to land dazed, a good few yards back. ALFONSO whoops a little gasp of triumph as he witnesses the two PONY BOYS sprawled against a tree with their legs tangled together and half in midair. ALFONSO smiles and turns to continue down the path. But when he turns AFY is right there behind him.

ALFONSO

Afy?! (surprised)

With a quick slash of AFY's hand, and full on in the middle of his forehead, ALFONSO falls unconscious instantly.

16.ext field alfonso hut day

ALFONSO is lying on the furs. AFY is by his side watching him. AFY places her hand over ALFONSO face, forehead to chin, and ALFONSO wakes as if by magic. ALFONSO looks around and sees AFY.

ALFONSO

What happened?.  You again? But why will you not let me go?!

AFY

I told you that you could not go. You should start doing what I say. Of course you should only do it up to your Kingdomnation...then you will decide what to do.

ALFONSO

Kingdomnation? What do you mean?

AFY

Your Kingdomnation! When you become our king...

ALFONSO

Coronation! You mean Coronation! (laugh).

AFY

For the Pony Boys it’s Kingdomnation! (stressed) And we know our stuff!

ALFONSO

Pony Boys? Have you had told me about Pony Boys before? Who are the Pony Boys?

AFY

We are! Of course! (she add a little indignantly) We are the PONY BOYS!

ALFONSO

But why Pony Boys? I thought that ponies were horses!

AFY

Yes, and? This is us! We are Ponies! We are the souls of Ponies past!

ALFONSO

You know Afy, I always liked the Kings...and Princesses... but I cannot be your King, this is not my world! I have my family, my friends...my stuff, you know?

AFY

Of course you do...but we cannot do anything! You've been selected and it is therefore determined! It has been many hundreds of years that we have been waiting for you! You cannot escape your fate! The Pony Boys have lived without someone to guide them for centuries! And our Legend said that one day you would come and that you would guide us and take care of us! Do you understand? You are our future King!

17. int alfonso hoMe living room dAY

The bell rings impatiently several times without the time to even give someone the opportunity to open it. From within the kitchen comes DOMENICA.

DOMENICA

Hang on...I’m coming...

DOMENICA opens the door through which comes THOMAS who crosses in front of DOMENICA, breathless.

THOMAS

Domenica......Domenica...Aunt Mafalda? Where is Aunt Mafalda?

MAFALDA comes from inside, worried.

MAFALDA

Oh boy, what has happened? What is going on? What is all this noise? (notice Alfonso is not there)Oh my God where is Alfonso? What’s happened to Alfonso?

THOMAS

We do not know Aunt, Alfonso disappeared...we were looking for firewood and each one of us went our own way... he never showed up again... we called him for ages!

MAFALDA

Thomas, oh... I do not believe it! Alfonso has been left alone in the mountains? (in a state of great concern). The mobile, get me the mobile so I can call your uncle. Quickly! The mobile...

MAFALDA picks up the phone and calls to Gustavo.

18.INT GUSTAVO OFFICE DAY

GUSTAVO is on the phone. THERESA, his secretary, knocks and enters, she makes a sign to GUSTAVO, that she has something important to say.

GUSTAVO

Sorry I have something important here... But I like the idea... Thank You, I call you later. Bye.

GUSTAVO finishes the call with someone.

GUSTAVO

What happened?

THERESA

Doctor Gustavo, you have an urgent call from your wife... She ask you to call her right now.She was strongly upset.

GUSTAVO

Thank You Theresa... (picks the phone and makes the call. Waits a second while it connects) Yes it’s me... Mafalda? Calm down... yes... what’s happened?... Alfonso what?...Lost? Mountain...and Thomas? Ah, with you? No way... have you already called the police? No?...Ok...wait I'll be right there...Call the police immediately...I'm coming home now!

GUSTAVO looks to THERESA worried.

GUSTAVO

Theresa, I have to leave. Cancel all of my appointments for today. My son is lost in the mountains.

GUSTAVO abruptly leaves his office. THERESA gasps livid with no reaction.

19.INT ALFONSO home living room DAY

GUSTAVO arrives home angry and comes thundering into the room where MAFALDA, THOMAS and a very tearful DOMENICA are.

GUSTAVO

I already called the police. Did you call them too?

MAFALDA nods and both realize that they were told the same thing.

GUSTAVO

How is it possible? This country does not realize! They’ll fail to organize in time a rescue team before Monday! However, we have a kid lost in the mountains, without knowing how he is, where he is...and who knows what else!

GUSTAVO sits down on the sofa thoughtfully with his head between his hands. Then he closes his eyes and runs his hands down his face. He opens his eyes determinedly, looking firmly at DOMENICA.

GUSTAVO

Domenica, go and get me some canned food and fill some water bottles, then bring them here. Mafalda, go to the garage and get me one of the backpacks. I’ll wear other clothing and prepare some equipment. Thomas, go and look for flashlights and batteries. There should also be some thick rope in the garage. Go with Aunt Mafalda. I'm going to the mountain!

MAFALDA

I'll come too Gustavo!

GUSTAVO

Hmm...I’m not sure if it's a good idea, but you will be less desperate if you are with me...bring the bags and go put something more comfortable on...trainers or boots.(Gustavo smiles).

TIME ELLIPSE.

20.Int ALFONSO HOME LIVING ROOM DAY

GUSTAVO, MAFALDA, THOMAS and DOMENICA meet back at the room again. Upon a couch is a lot of equipment and food cans. GUSTAVO opens one of the backpacks that THOMAS had gone to get from the garage and begins to put things in it. A thick rope, a large machete with an appearance of being very old, torches and batteries, a first aid box and even binoculars. All this, plus a pile of food cans. He looks around and also places in the backpack an axe from the garden used to cut firewood for the fireplace. After accommodating the things into the backpack in the best manner, GUSTAVO closes the bags and looks at MAFALDA and smiles again.

GUSTAVO

Are you sure that you want to come?

MAFALDA

Of course I do!

GUSTAVO

Thomas, go home and tell your parents that we’ve gone to the mountain to look for Alfonso ourselves. If they can, ask them to continue to contact the police, especially if we do not get back before Monday.

THOMAS confirms the words of GUSTAVO with a nod, and everybody walks out. DOMENICA walks to the door, and watches as GUSTAVO and MAFALDA leave for the mountain.
