CLASS DISMISSED (Mr Jones)

Today I leave you with another exercise that I wrote, for the CBBC series "Class Dismissed". Mr Jones, the business teacher who is a failed entrepeneur, but thinks he's a kind of Lord Sugar.

NOTE: This was an exercise and is not official.

INT SCHOOL IT ROOM DAY

The CHILDREN are sat at their places, with head-sets linked to the computer. MR JONES is on the phone.

MR JONES
Sell it now!...
Sell it! thirty five?
Put to thirty six!

MR JONES points to GIRL 1. The GIRL writes on the computer and waits for more information from MR JONES.

MR JONES
Buy it! Buy it!
Point twenty three!
Great! Brilliant!

MR JONES points again to GIRL 1 who writes again on the computer. MR JONES ends the call with a big smile.

MR JONES
This is a real life smell
boys and girls!
Business! Pounds!
Lot’s of pounds!

MR JONES faces the class and solemnly shakes a big hand-bell making a horrible sound.

MR JONES
Session is open!

The CHILDREN don’t hide their boredom.

MR JONES
Unfortunately,
I’ve checked your weekly performance
and some of you are doing poorly.

BOY 1
Is that about the marking sir?

MR JONES
Of course not!
It’s about the market!
Who cares about marking?!
You Billy! How much did you made
on your cupcake sale?

BILLY
I finished selling at ninety seven pence,
a total of forty six cupcakes...
All the stock!

MR JONES
Ninety seven pence?

BILLY
Yes sir. I started on eighty five.

MR JONES
That wasn’t bad Billy...
And you Sally
what did you get
from your loom band stall?

SALLY
Erm... Not sure sir...
Let me check.

SALLY writes frantically on the computer and answers very eficiente.

SALLY
I've started the session at fifty five pence
and ended the day at forty five...
Unfortunately I tried
but could not sell all of the stock.

MR JONES
What?! You didn’t?

SALLY
Sorry sir...
it was just a couple of bands...

MR JONES
Just a couple of bands?
 And you think it’s alright?!

SALLY
I did my best, but
the Year Seven Class had a stall
with friendship bracelets on the same day...
And looms were in a losing position...

BILLY
Can I say something?
I tried to warn Sally
about the friendship bracelets...

MR JONES
I don’t want to hear anything more!
 Billy. Sally. Wait outside.

BILLY and SALLY leave the classroom disappointed.

INT SCHOOL CORRIDOR DAY

BILLY and SALLY are leaning on the wall with sad faces. The classroom door opens and BOY 1 peeks.

BOY 1
Mr Jones will see you now.

BILLY and SALLY challenge each other and enter the room.

INT SCHOOL IT ROOM DAY

BILLY and SALLY sit in front of MR JONES. Tension in the air.

MR JONES
So, Billy...
You managed to sell forty six cupcakes.
You started at eighty five pence
and finished at ninety seven.

BILLY
Yes Mr Jones.

MR JONES
And you Sally...
You didn’t sell all of your stock of Loom Bands.
You had the chance to make extra profit
if you kept the price up but you didn’t manage that.

SALLY
I can explain...

MR JONES
I don’t need to hear your voice again today!
Anyway, you sold one hundred and seventy eight bracelets,
in the end you made more money.

SALLY smiles confidently and looks at the other CHILDREN in the class. BILLY nods, disappointed.

MR JONES
At the end of the day,
the one who makes more money wins.
In that event I’m sorry to say
(points to Billy)
Billy, you’re fired!

We stay with MR JONES’s finger pointing to BILLY. SALLY interrupts.

SALLY
Sir... we are at school.

MR JONES shows some confusion, but repeats the gesture pointing to BILLY.

MR JONES
Billy... erm... You’ve got a detention!

BILLY
Thank you Mr Jones.

BILLY shakes hands with SALLY and leaves the classroom. Other CHILDREN embrace SALLY in celebration.
