INT.
ORPHANAGE CANTEEN DAY
The Boys are taking their places for
breakfast. MAGPIE, sad, eats slowly, quietly and with difficulty. His movements
are slow. SISTER VIRGINIA enters with LITTLE TOMMY from outside. LITTLE TOMMY,
downcast, sits alongside MAGPIE. MAGPIE stops eating.
MAGPIE
What
do you want? There are no other places to sit?
LITTLE TOMMY
Magpie,
don’t be angry … I'm also sad ... I’m sorry.
MAGPIE looks furiously at LITTLE TOMMY.
MAGPIE
Sad why? If you had not followed us, Jay would not have died ...
(With scorn) You were not even his friend ... You
were never a friend ...
LITTLE TOMMY
Why not? ...
MAGPIE
Friends do not blackmail each other!
LITTLE TOMMY
You promised to take me ... And then you didn’t do it.
MAGPIE
Because
you blackmailed us! Get out! ...
LITTLE TOMMY
Do
not get mad at me ... I said I was sorry.
MAGPIE
Sorry?
(Rising tone of voice) Sorry? Is that it? Jay died because of you!
MAGPIE rises threateningly. The Sisters, who
oversee the breakfast, go towards MAGPIE to calm him down. But before they can
do something MAGPIE grabs LITTLE TOMMY and the two roll onto the floor. MAGPIE hits
LITTLE TOMMY.
LITTLE TOMMY
(Shouts) Stop! Stop! Are you crazy?!
MAGPIE
Son of a bitch! Jay died because of you! (Shouts) It's YOUR FAULT!
MAGPIE, in tears, runs out of the canteen. The
Sisters try to calm him down but MAGPIE goes towards the door, onto the street.
The Sisters cannot stop him. MAGPIE enters onto the town.
EXT.
CITY DAY (scene set to music)
MAGPIE runs through the streets in tears in
the middle of other people. He runs along the streets. Finally he allows himself to sit down with his head resting on
crossed arms, leaning on his knees. He begins to weep bitterly. (Many
plans of MAGPIE in different places in Lewisham but walking towards the
University Hospital) MAGPIE wanders the city. At the Hospital he stops and
looks curiously. He stops at a diner where a group of OLDER MEN are chatting. MAGPIE
talks to them. The OLDER MEN look at him with surprise, and then talk to him.
They exchange some words with each other and point in one direction. MAGPIE
looks in that direction, thanks the men and heads that way. The OLD MEN look at
MAGPIE for a moment and talk to each other. MAGPIE moves away. MAGPIE now walks
down the street towards the pub of Janine. He looks at all the buildings until he
gets near the pub. The pub has boards sealing the windows. MAGPIE approaches,
peeking through the windows where able. He discovers some loose boards. Without
hesitating to be seen, he eventually enters one of the windows.
INT. PUB
DAY
MAGPIE comes from outside and looks around.
There is rubbish and dust everywhere, accumulated over the years. The chairs
and tables are still messy. On the floor are toppled chairs. The bar is covered
in empty bottles. Some are broken in the dust and dirt, where there are also
some St George’s flags. MAGPIE, curious, begins to know the place while looking
around. He runs his fingers along the counter, leaving finger trails in the
dust. He sees the hallway to the room and heads there.
INT.
PUB BEDROOM DAY
MAGPIE peeks into the room, around the door from
the hallway. Light passes through the boards on the windows. He enters the room
and sees some clothes eroding on the ground by the wardrobe. Slowly he opens
the wardrobe. Inside are still some remnants of clothing hung up, eaten by
moths and time. He caresses the clothes while looking at them with emotion. MAGPIE
sees some blankets at the bottom of the wardrobe, the blankets where he was
hidden. He passes his hands over them and feels something underneath. Lifting
the covers he uncovers a pile of old magazines. They all bear Michael Thompson
on the covers. We can read some headlines: "Michael Thompson, idol of the
new generation", "Michael Thompson, the emergence of a great
actor." MAGPIE flicks through them with curiosity. In the magazines we can
see photographs of Michael surrounded by pretty girls at parties and events. All
are with a smile of confidence and glamor. Others are of scene shots from films
and television dramas.
MAGPIE
What
a lucky guy ... Look at that girl, so beautiful and so many parties.
(Thoughtfully) One day I'll be like this guy ... Yes I will ...
MAGPIE picks up the magazines under his arm
and goes back out to the city streets.
