"MAGPIE - The half-life kid" Part X by JR VILLAR

38.INT.PUB BEDROOM NIGHT (PLAN SEQUENCE SET TO MUSIC)

MAGPIE takes a candle from the shoulder bag and lights it.
He puts the bag down, grabs a broom and begins to sweep the
room. He covers his mouth and nose with his shirt and
removes the bed covers.

39.EXT.CITY NIGHT (PLAN SEQUENCE SET TO MUSIC)

MAGPIE shakes the bedcovers out the window.

40.INT.PUB BEDROOM NIGHT (PLAN SEQUENCE SET TO MUSIC)

MAGPIE cleans the dust from the bedside table. He opens a
draw and finds a photo frame with a photograph inside.
Moving nearer the candle, he wipes the dust from the glass
and sees written in the corner "Janine and Big Ben, March
1995." (MUSIC FADE OUT).

MAGPIE
Mum...

MAGPIE gasps emotionally and smiles with tears in his eyes.

MAGPIE
How beautiful you are my mother...
(Kisses the photo)

MAGPIE sits the candle on the bedside table and lies down in
bed to contemplate the picture. He cradles and hugs the
frame. Blowing out the candle he falls asleep, exhausted.

41.INT.PUB BEDROOM DAY

MAGPIE wakes and stretches in bed. Light enters through the
window. The room is now cleaner. He finds the frame with the
photograph still by his side. He picks it up.

MAGPIE
Hello Mum... You have no idea of
the surprise I’m going to do for
you!

MAGPIE kisses the photo, puts on the bedside table and
checks that the magazines are still in his bag before
heading out to the bar.

42.INT.PUB DAY

MAGPIE opens the tap. He waits for a minute until the water
becomes clean and transparent. MAGPIE, satisfied, smiles,
wets his hands and reluctantly test the water. He pulls a
face of approval. He drinks some water and washes his face.
He exits to the street with his bag.

43.EXT.CITY DAY

MAGPIE runs down the street with a big smile. He passes a
greengrocer and steals an orange but no one takes any
notice. He eats the orange along the way. Arriving at the
gate of Michael’s house he rings the doorbell. He waits a
moment until JOHN opens the door smiling.

JOHN
Hey there kid! Good morning... You
came back!

MAGPIE
Of course I came... I said I would!

JOHN leads MAGPIE into the garden.
44.EXT.MICHAEL’S HOUSE GARDEN DAY

JOHN
Man of his word. I like that! Are
you ready to work?

MAGPIE
I’m ready for anything!

JOHN
Let’s go then! Have you eaten? Do
you want something before we start?

MAGPIE
Thank you but I already ate an
orange so I’m good to go.

JOHN takes MAGPIE up to a wall of hedges.

JOHN
Look what we have to do.

MAGPIE looks at the hedge and imagines the work that lies
ahead. He looks towards the house trying to see Michael.
JOHN hands MAGPIE a broom and starts to trim the hedge.
MAGPIE begins to sweep, but keeps glancing back to the
house.

MAGPIE
What a beautiful house...

JOHN
It is. They all are around here.
Some are older, some more modern,
but they’re all fantastic.

MAGPIE
One day I will have one too. I’m
going to be a TV star.

JOHN
Really? (Laughs) When you’re famous
don’t forget to hire me, ok?

MAGPIE
Of course I’ll hire you to deal
with my garden. But I’ll help you
do it!

JOHN
What?!... Kid, do you really think
that when you become famous you’ll
help me to sweep?

MAGPIE
Well, why not?

JOHN
You have a good heart MAGPIE. Who
knows, one day you might even be
rewarded for it.

At this point MICHAEL leaves his house. MAGPIE follows him
with his eyes and stops sweeping. MICHAEL is talking
casually on the phone. MAGPIE is ecstatic at seeing MICHAEL.
MICHAEL notices MAGPIE. MAGPIE disguises his actions and
continues to sweep.

JOHN
What’s up kid ... Are you going to
stop sweeping every time you see Mr
Thompson?

MAGPIE
No, no sir... Sorry. I’m still not
used to being so close to a TV
star.

JOHN
One day you won’t care anymore.
When you have seen a lot of them
here, you get used to seeing stars
from magazines and television...
Now, come on, this work is lagging
behind.

MAGPIE
I’m sorry sir...

MAGPIE resumes looking at MICHAEL very quickly. JOHN is
amused. (ELIPSE OF TIME) JOHN and MAGPIE have finished.
MAGPIE looks at JOHN before sweeping up the last few leaves.

JOHN
What’s up? Tired?

MAGPIE
No sir. We can continue.

JOHN
Yes we can, but now let’s have
lunch, eh? Wait here while I go and
get some food.

MAGPIE
Yes sir.

JOHN goes to the rear door of the house where the kitchen is
located. MAGPIE looks at the house. MICHAEL is wearing a
bathing suit and sunglasses, heading towards the pool.
MAGPIE follows him again with a look. MICHAEL continues
towards the pool. When MAGPIE continues to look, MICHAEL
stops and takes off his sunglasses, calling MAGPIE over.
MAGPIE is worried.

MICHAEL
Hey! Boy... come here!

MAGPIE fumbles, hesitating.

MICHAEL
Come here boy! Run!

MAGPIE runs to MICHAEL. MICHAEL looks at him from top to
bottom. MAGPIE swallows.

MICHAEL
Why do you spend the time looking
at me like that?

MAGPIE
No reason sir... Just because I
have never seen an actor so
closely.

MICHAEL
That’s no reason for that kind of
look kid. (Joking) It’s more like
you’re trying to seduce me... Do
you have anything to do?

MAGPIE
I’m going to lunch now sir. Mr John
went to get our food.

JOHN comes from the kitchen carrying a tray of food. JOHN is
worried when he sees MICHAEL talking to MAGPIE.

JOHN
Sorry Mr. Thompson... has the kid
been causing some kind of trouble?

MICHAEL
No... nothing. He just seems to
stop and stare whenever I appear.

JOHN
Sorry... I should not have allowed
him to help.

MICHAEL
No, John... If you think he’s a
good kid then there’s no problem.
The kid’s done nothing wrong.

JOHN
He is a good guy and works well...
He asked to help. But I told him
there’s no wage in it, just food.

MICHAEL
Hmm... Okay (MAGPIE looks very
shrunken). Can you not give him ten
pounds for the day?

MAGPIE gives a big smile.

JOHN
Yeah, sure. I’ve got it.

MICHAEL
What’s your name boy?

MAGPIE
Magpie, sir.

MICHAEL
That’s a funny name. Well, Magpie.
Behave yourself and everything will
be fine.

MAGPIE
Yes sir.

MICHAEL winks at JOHN and goes to the pool. JOHN looks at
MAGPIE.

JOHN
What did you start, eh?

MAGPIE
I swear I did not do anything sir.

JOHN
Well whether you did or not, I will
never know... But you just earned
ten quid!

MAGPIE SMILES.

JOHN
Let’s eat now. We still have a lot
to do today.

JOHN and MAGPIE sit in the shade and eat. MICHAEL looks at
MAGPIE before diving into the pool.
