MAGPIE leaves Michael’s garden and enters onto the street. JOHN comes with him to open and close the gate.
JOHN
Tomorrow Magpie.
MAGPIE
Tomorrow, sir.
MAGPIE walks towards the city centre and the pub. He
enters an ice cream parlour and leaves shortly afterwards delighted
with his ice cream. MAGPIE is very happy.
46.INT. PUB BEDROOM DAY
MAGPIE enters from the street. He lays the bag down
and jumps into bed in a good mood. He takes the frame with a picture of
Janine off the side.
MAGPIE
Look Mom... (Takes the money from his pocket) I got
ten pounds for working today. I still have eight of them after buying
an ice cream. You don’t know where I'm working... But soon enough I'll
show you. It is a surprise for you. Tomorrow I'll get it all for you.
He kisses the picture and continues to talk to her.
MAGPIE
You know, it feels like you're my guardian angel.
After I found you my life has begun to go so well. I lost my best
friend, but I found you ... Look, if you find Jay out there, take care
of him. Do it for me and for him. He was my best friend... Still is.
He’ll keep you company.
MAGPIE puts the frame back on the bedside table and falls asleep.
EXT.SCENES TRANSITION
Plans of the city from twilight to dawn.
47.EXT.MICHAEL’S HOUSE GARDEN
MAGPIE
is helping JOHN. They are dealing with a hedge near the pool. MICHAEL
swims to the edge of the pool and climbs out. He looks at MAGPIE and
smiles.
MICHAEL
How is he John? The boy is working well?
JOHN
Yes sir. We have a future gardener here.
MICHAEL
Good for you boy! Learn everything from John, there is no better gardener in London.
MAGPIE laughs. JOHN looks satisfied. JOHN remembers a previous conversation with MAGPIE.
JOHN
Ah... (Exclamation) and he also wants to be a television star!
MICHAEL wipes himself down with a towel and approaches JOHN and MAGPIE.
MICHAEL
A TV star? Are you going to compete with me?
MAGPIE
No sir... I'll be a star just like you. I’ll be famous and have a lot of pretty girls.
MICHAEL and JOHN laugh.
MICHAEL
Look at you, cheeky boy. Pretty girls? Where'd you get that idea?
MAGPIE
Magazines...
MICHAEL
Well... Those girls only appear for the photographs.
JOHN
They could appear here eh? (Laughs) Go now Magpie let Mr. Thompson rest.
MAGPIE
Yes sir...
MICHAEL
Take care, kid!
MICHAEL walks back towards the house beside the pool. MAGPIE takes courage.
MAGPIE
Sir...
MICHAEL turns around surprised.
MICHAEL
Yes lad... what is it?
JOHN tries to stop MAGPIE, but MICHAEL signals to him not to worry. MAGPIE is shy and speaks with some trepidation.
MAGPIE
Will you… could you autographing my magazines?
MAGPIE takes his bag and pulls out a pen and the magazines.
MICHAEL
Look at the kid eh?! Show me...
MAGPIE extends the magazines to MICHAEL. MICHAEL flicks through them interested. He enjoys them and remembers the good times.
MICHAEL
Hee... I do not even remember most of these parties.
(Laughs) That outfit... (Sees the date on the cover) That old thing...
1993... this one 1995... What a long time ago. Where did you get these
magazines kid?
MAGPIE
They are my mother’s... She’s a big fan of you.
MICHAEL
Yeah? (Still interested in the magazines).
MAGPIE
She was very fond of you... she had a large collection.
MICHAEL
Give me that pen... Of course I’ll sign them for you.
MICHAEL goes to sign them.
MICHAEL
I’ll write a dedication. What's the name of your mother? She will love this.
MAGPIE
Well... she died.
MICHAEL and JOHN are surprised.
JOHN
She’s dead? How? So that’s why you want an autograph?
MAGPIE
I want to surprise her... Wherever she is in the sky. You know... someone killed her.
MICHAEL
Gosh boy, how sad... sorry I asked. It’s very beautiful that you’re giving her this surprise.
MAGPIE
That's what I must do. She saved my life. She hid me before she died, but could not hide my twin brother. They killed him too.
MICHAEL
How can someone do such a thing?
MAGPIE smiles, resigned.
MAGPIE
I do not know, sir.
MICHAEL
What a life eh?! Let’s see... I’ll write the dedication to her. What was the name of your mother?
MAGPIE
Janine. Janine Parker.
MICHAEL is petrified.
MICHAEL
What?
MAGPIE
Janine Parker... everyone knew her there, on the Lewisham High Street.
MICHAEL, livid, drops the magazines and the pen. JOHN and MAGPIE are concerned.
JOHN
Are you feeling ok Mr Thompson?
MAGPIE takes the magazines and the pen from the floor.
MICHAEL
I just went a little dizzy... erm... send the boy home.
MICHAEL, baffled, heads towards the house.
JOHN
Do you need anything?
MICHAEL responds angrily and enters the house.
MICHAEL
Send the boy away!
JOHN looks at MAGPIE without realizing what is happening.
JOHN
What happened to him?
MAGPIE
I don’t know...
JOHN takes a ten pound note from his pocket and hands it to MAGPIE.
JOHN
Take it... its better if you go.
MAGPIE is confused.
MAGPIE
Did I do something wrong?
JOHN
No... Of course not. Maybe Mr Thompson felt ill, I don’t know... Forget it. Go home, ok?
MAGPIE, saddened, stores the magazines back in the
bag. JOHN walks him to the gate. He lets MAGPIE out, closes the gate
and looks at the house, intrigued.
